What is Cupping?

Cupping is a form of alternative therapy that dates back to over 5000 years old. Cupping therapy places special cups onto the skin that creates a negative pressure that draws the skin, muscle and fascia upwards, this creates a decompression between the layers allowing them to move more freely.

Cupping therapy is a type of deep tissue massage that can be used for pain relief, reducing inflammation, increasing blood flow to specific areas and relaxation within the muscles.

Does it leave bruises?

A bruise is caused by trauma to the soft tissues which results in the purple and yellow marks that are left. The suction caused by cupping draws blood towards the skin from the local blood vessels which is natural and does not damage the surrounding tissues. Despite it appearing to be a bruise the discoloration is normal and helps to promote the positive benefits from cupping. These discolorations in the skin will last between 1-2 weeks but most will fade faster than this.

Cupping in Proformance Clinics

Cupping treatments can be received in a normal sports massage session booked with Leon and the type of cupping you will receive in the clinic is classed as dry cupping. During sessions cups will be applied accompanied with movements to encourage a reduction in muscle tension allowing greater range of motion in the targeted area.
